Goals are the name of the game. We all know strikers are trusted with the responsibility of hitting the back of the net but a goalscoring midfielder is an asset that every big team needs. Fortunately for Leeds, they appear to have one on the books but his development needs to continue next season.
Alfie McCalmont impressed last season whilst on loan with Oldham Athletic in League Two. Despite the physicality of the lower leagues, McCalmont made the middle of the park his own last term and went on to hit the back of the net a whopping 10 times – not bad for a 21-year-old midfielder.
The Northern Ireland international is now headed for League One on loan according to reports as Leeds look to enhance his development.
Given his impressive campaign last term, clubs will no doubt be queuing up to take him on next season, with assists also something he contributed regularly for the Latics, ending the season with five to his name. McCalmont’s contributions no doubt steered Oldham away from trouble last season as they finished clear of relegation in 18th spot.
There’s no doubt that he’ll help whoever he joins next season as he continues to develop. One day soon he may very well be banging in the goals at Elland Road in the Premier League whilst adding to his two international caps. But that’s for the future. For now, it’s about finding the right League One club to neuter his growth.
