Don Goodman has claimed that Leeds United are one team in the Championship this season who can go on to establish a comfortable lead at the top of the league table.
Leeds are sitting fourth in the Championship standings after four games and are preparing to face fellow promotion contenders Burnley at Elland Road on Saturday.
The Whites have been tipped as one of the strong contenders to achieve automatic promotion this season after they lost the playoff final in the previous campaign.
Leeds lost a number of key players such as Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray but managed to bring in new faces such as Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani, Ao Tanaka and Isaac Schmidt towards the end of the summer transfer window.
The Whites are in form going into the big game against Burnley and Goodman is still confident that they are favourites for promotion this season.
Don Goodman backs Leeds United to establish a lead at the top of the table
The Leeds-born ex-striker stressed that he still has the Whites as the favourites to earn automatic promotion and feels that after a shaky start to the season, Daniel Farke’s side have established their credentials in the last few games.
He pointed out that Leeds are in a better position than last season at the same stage of the campaign and have managed to shake off Farke’s reputation of being a slow starter.
Goodman has real optimism for Leeds and believes if there is one team that can move to the top of the table and establish a strong lead, then that is the Whites.
“100%, Leeds United are still my favourites for the title”, Goodman was quoted as saying by the Football League World.
“I think that conceding three goals against Portsmouth and against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup made them reset defensively. That’s the reason they went to West Bromwich Albion with the intention of not losing and it’s helped them re-establish themselves as that solid unit which was one of the best defences in the Championship last season.
“They went to the Hawthorns and kept a clean sheet, as opposed to throwing caution to the wind, and nobody has scored against them since. You can’t expect to concede so many goals and be successful.
“They’re unbeaten this season with eight points on the board, whereas this time last year they only had five points. Daniel Farke’s teams have been notoriously slow starters, too.
“Looking at the bigger picture, it could have been a lot worse for Leeds United, I’m really optimistic for them.
If there’s one team that I can see having the ability to establish a comfortable lead at the top of the table, it is Leeds.”
