Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has already cautioned that the club’s second season back in the Premier League is likely to be even tougher than the first. Seeing one of last season’s fellow relegation battlers prepare to spend £100m on a single player only underlines the scale of the challenge.
Daniel Farke is eager for Leeds to show greater ambition in the transfer market. Still, the club must also operate within the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio regulations, which impose spending limits.
Even so, Leeds are pressing ahead with plans to strengthen the squad. They remain interested in Sporting Lisbon centre-back Ousmane Diomande, with a club-record bid still a possibility if the right conditions are met.
The problem for Leeds is that the Premier League transfer market shows little sign of slowing down. Clubs are once again prepared to spend heavily, and one of the Whites’ relegation rivals from last season is now attempting to complete a deal to sign a £100m midfielder.
Sandro Tonali wants to join Leeds United
Spurs have attacked the transfer market with real intent, determined to avoid another campaign spent hovering just around the relegation zone.
They are prepared to pay more than Manchester United to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and are pushing hard to sign Tonali this summer.
Newcastle have already rejected an offer from Tottenham for the Italian, but according to Sky Sports News, the player wants the move this summer.
Tonali has given his nod to a move to Tottenham as long as they can agree on a fee with Newcastle in the ongoing transfer window.
His representatives have an agreement in place with Spurs over a contract, and he will earn £275,000 per week if he moves to north London this summer.
With Nottingham Forest getting more than £120m for Anderson, Newcastle are prepared to dig their heels in to get a huge fee for Tonali.
The Magpies want a deal worth over £100m before agreeing to sell the Italian this summer.
The Premier League spending rules favour established clubs with revenue streams
Tottenham finished 17th in the last two seasons of the Premier League and were completely outperformed by Leeds United in the 2025/26 campaign.
However, the Premier League’s spending rules are allowing Spurs to throw money at the problem, while Leeds are being curbed and forced to spend within their means.
The Squad Cost Ratio rules allow established sides such as Tottenham, with big revenue streams because of their stadium, to spend big on transfers.
They can afford to go for a player like Tonali or compete with Manchester United for Fernandes because they are not in danger of breaking the spending rules.
However, Leeds have to cut their cloth accordingly after just one season in the Premier League and look for value in the market through free transfers.
Leeds will hope to spend more as they establish themselves in the top flight and complete the expansion of Elland Road in the coming years.
