£125k a week Leeds United ace lifts the lid on summer move to Elland Road – ‘Once the communication started…’

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has caught many by surprise with his displays for Leeds United this season, with his goals proving crucial in helping the club keep a comfortable distance from the relegation zone.

There was scepticism among supporters when Leeds opted to bring Calvert-Lewin in on a free transfer last summer. Persistent injury problems in recent years, coupled with a modest goal return, had raised doubts about the move.

Leeds, however, were confident the 28-year-old could make a telling contribution if he stayed fit, and he has delivered on that belief throughout the campaign. Everton could be in for some agony when Leeds take on David Moyes’ men next week.

Daniel Farke’s late-2025 tactical switch has brought the best out of the striker, reigniting his form and prompting calls for Thomas Tuchel to consider him for an England recall ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin opens up on joining Leeds from Everton

Leeds’ decision to sign the 28-year-old striker on a free transfer was a surprise as the club were expected to spend big to recruit a forward last summer.

Calvert-Lewin conceded that Leeds’ offer did come in late, and he was considering several options for weeks after leaving Everton as a free agent at the end of last season.

He insisted that once the talks started with Leeds, it took very little to finalise an agreement, and he has felt brilliant since he arrived at Elland Road in the summer.

Calvert-Lewin said on Sky Sports: “I suppose it came about quite late, really.

“When you’re in that position, every day is different, you’re free, you can kind of sign anywhere at anytime and you’re weighing up different options and things like that, having different communications, and it’s a strange position to be in if you’ve never been in that position.

“But I think once the communication started with Leeds, I think it took maybe a week… Had conversations and had a really good feeling from the start and got it done four days before the start of the season.”

Calvert-Lewin has proven his detractors wrong

Leeds fans were not impressed when the club signed the 28-year-old striker on a free transfer. They were expecting a marquee name on a big fee, while the Whites signed someone who has had injury issues.

Even pundits turned their nose at Leeds signing Calvert-Lewin, and his struggles in the first couple of months of the season further provided ammunition to his critics.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s per-90 attacking metrics and percentile rankings over the last year
Statistic (per 90) Value Percentile
Non-penalty goals 0.50 79
npxG (non-penalty xG) 0.50 80
Shots total 2.98 74
Assists 0.06 26
xAG (expected assisted goals) 0.09 41
npxG + xAG 0.59 74
Shot-creating actions 2.18 53

However, Calvert-Lewin’s goals have been huge in turning Leeds away from potential relegation to the chance of a comfortable mid-table finish this season, and all it needed was for Farke to switch his tactics.

He has broken records at Leeds this season, and he is the perfect example of not writing off anyone too easily, for both fans and pundits.
