Leeds United are hoping to wrap up automatic promotion to the Premier League in the next six weeks despite the race being tight at the top of the Championship table. The Whites are aware promotion will bring the challenge of building a squad that will be good enough to survive in the Premier League, which has been a real issue for promoted teams in recent seasons. Leeds need to strengthen several areas of their squad but there are a few key positions they are likely to prioritise in the next window.
The struggles of Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton this season have provided the hard truth Leeds United must face if they get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.
The three promoted teams spent big last summer but it has done little to help their cause and all three seem doomed for relegation from the Premier League in the coming months.
Leeds would need significant funds to renew the squad that would take them up as the gulf between the Championship and the Premier League is so vast, that most of their current players could be deemed not good enough for the top flight.
However, certain areas would need to be prioritised and Leeds would like to ensure that they have a few key players signed up as soon as possible in the next summer transfer window if they get promoted.
The 3 players Leeds United are likely to sign this summer:
Aaron Ramsdale – Leeds United need a new number-one
Illan Meslier’s errors this season have cost Leeds points and there is a feeling the Whites could have run away with the league if they had a better goalkeeper. The Frenchman is almost certain to be replaced between the sticks as the club are searching for a new number one in the summer. Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher is the number one target but several other big Premier League sides want him as well. Ramsdale is the more pragmatic choice given he could be available for a decent fee with Southampton likely to get relegated.
Kalvin Phillips – Too much spoke for not to be a fire
The 29-year-old midfielder has been relentlessly linked with a return to Leeds despite the Whites fans not being too enthused about the prospect. Phillips will be looking for a new team as Ipswich Town, where he is on loan, are set to get relegated and Manchester City are keen to sell him. He wants to return to Leeds and if the Whites get promoted and both Phillips and Manchester City agree to a financial compromise, a deal is likely to go through.
Can you name the season these 10 Leeds United shirts are from?
Tammy Abraham – a Premier League-proven hitman
Leeds will sign a striker or two in the summer transfer window and considerable work has already gone in to identify targets. Abraham has emerged as one of the options due to his experience of delivering the goods in the Premier League. The former Chelsea man has been in Italy since 2021 and is currently on loan at AC Milan. If the Serie A giants do not sign him on a permanent deal, he would likely favour a return to England in the summer.
