£400k Leeds United man deemed not of the required standard – He deserves more respect

Leeds United are under pressure after dropping more Championship points this weekend. A 2-2 draw against Swansea at Elland Road has led to much soul-searching as the Whites struggle to get their season back on track and are facing the real threat of missing out on automatic promotion for the second year running.

The performance and the result on Saturday have led to Leeds United fighting to keep their hopes of earning automatic promotion to the Premier League alive.

They have two wins in their last six league games and have dropped to second in the table, where they are level on points with Burnley, who are third in the Championship standings.

Illan Meslier has come under real criticism for another disastrous error against Swansea, and Farke has been urged to replace the Frenchman with Karl Darlow against Luton Town next Saturday.

“He is not good enough” – Former Leeds United star

Darlow has not started a Championship game this season despite emerging as the number one goalkeeper for Wales on the international stage.

There are calls for Leeds to bring in Darlow against Luton, but former Leeds star Ross McCormack insisted that the Welshman is not good enough to replace Meslier.

The former White backed Meslier and pointed out that the Frenchman has also won a lot of points for Leeds this season, so supporters should get off his back soon.

“Listen, he’s won Leeds points this season as well”, McCormack said on talkSPORT.

“It’s important not to jump down his throat too much – but it’s not the first time. But the back-up goalkeepers are not of the standard to come and replace him.”

Darlow deserves some respect, he is the Wales number 1

Darlow has only featured in the cup games and Farke has not even considered bringing him in for league fixtures until now.

There was a real call for Leeds to change goalkeepers at the start of 2025 when Meslier made a few more costly errors between the sticks.

However, Farke resisted making that change, and the Frenchman continued to enjoy the manager’s blind faith this season.

Can you name the Leeds game these 10 goal celebrations are from?

McCormack’s insistence that Darlow is not good enough is the typical disrespect the Welshman has received so far at Leeds. He has played Premier League and Championship football and is the number one goalkeeper for Wales.

You might not want the Welshman to play in goal, but to say he is not of the required standard is lazy punditry.
