49ers credited for building ‘the best Leeds United squad ever’ – but Rangers investment is still a potential problem

Leeds United are on the brink of promotion to the Premier League and Daniel Farke has already admitted that 20 more points from their remaining 13 games should get the job done. The club are looking forward to a summer of overhaul but the talk of their owners trying to buy Rangers has shocked a few at Elland Road. The 49ers have been steady custodians of the club over the last two years and backed Farke to rebuild the squad last summer when they could have easily sacked him. A deal to takeover Rangers could be completed by June and a former Leeds and Gers striker believes their work at Elland Road should enthuse the Ibrox faithful.

The Leeds United supporters are still not sure what to make of Paraag Marathe’s attempts to get involved at Rangers and the implications it could have at Elland Road.

Some have argued that if Leeds get back to the Premier League, the Whites would continue to remain the crown jewel for the 49ers because of the money involved in English football’s top flight and Rangers could get relegated to being their feeder club.

However, some counter-arguments suggest investment into Rangers could have far-reaching ramifications on Leeds as both clubs could end up jostling over the same limited budget.

For now, there is a sense of uncertainty but the former Leeds and Rangers striker Ross McCormack has claimed that the 49ers have been a positive influence at Leeds, which should excite the Gers fans.

‘They have built the best Leeds squad ever’ – former striker

The 49ers have brought some much-need expertise to Leeds’ recruitment and last summer’s business has their hallmark precision in the market.

Most of the players Leeds signed last year have ended up being a major part of the reason why they are sitting at the summit of the Championship table.

McCormack has gone a step further and insisted that barring a striker, the 49ers have built the best Leeds squad the Championship has ever seen.

The fact that Leeds are on course for promotion this season shows the kind of work the owners have carried out behind the scenes and the club now have some exciting times to look forward to in the future.

“When you look at what they’ve done at Leeds when you look at the squad they have built, it’s by far and away the best squad I’ve ever seen there”, the former White said on the Scottish Sun.

“I think they are probably missing a striker, but other than that, this Leeds United squad is the best I have seen put together in that league.

“They are on course for promotion back to the Premier League and there are more exciting times ahead.

“For me, it highlights the importance of getting the right people in charge to run a football club.”

Leeds fans are still right to be circumspect about the 49ers involvement at Rangers

The multi-club model is gradually taking hold of football and Leeds are already part of a conglomerate of clubs via Red Bull’s minority investment into the club.

However, the Leeds majority owners getting involved at another big club, albeit in Scotland, is a cause for worry for the fanbase given they are on the brink of returning to the Premier League.

The Leeds fans would have preferred less distraction ahead of one of the most consequential summers for the club but Marathe trying to buy Rangers is one.

If Leeds return to the Premier League, the financial gap between them and Rangers could be termed as a massive gulf but that is no guarantee for the Whites fans.

Leeds supporters would not want any money meant for the Whites redirected towards Rangers who are themselves desperate to close the vast gap with Celtic.

Rangers fans can feel excited about fresh investment but they should pardon their Leeds counterparts if they don’t share the same enthusiasm.
