49ers’ previous transfer blunder could come back to haunt Leeds United – fans won’t be happy

Leeds United have sparked into life recently when it comes to the January transfer window.

The Whites have signed Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton, after the 21-year-old initially rejected Leeds in the summer and opted to join Chelsea on loan, where he has had limited gametime.

Rumours have also begun to circulate regarding Joel Piroe’s future at Leeds, with Middlesbrough being one of the sides interested in securing his services.

However, there is another potential transfer that could completley embarrass the 49ers and leave Leeds supporters questioning the club’s owners.

Elia Caprile linked with Premier League move – price tag revealed

Caprile, 24, was on the books at Leeds between 2020 and 2022, but the Italian never managed to make a senior appearance for the Whites before being sold for just £1.5 million to Bari.

Considering how lacklustre Illan Meslier and now Lucas Perri have been consistently in goal for Leeds, the 49ers will be regretting the decision to allow Caprile to walk out the door for virtually nothing.

Since leaving Leeds, Caprile has gone on to impress at Cagliari and become one of the most talented shot stoppers in Serie A.

This form has seemingly attracted Premier League interest, with journalist Nicolo Schira reporting on X that a Premier League club is monitoring Caprile for next season, with a price tag of anywhere between £17.3m-£21.7m reportedly being enough to secure his signature.

If the unnamed club is Leeds, they will be kicking themselves for having to fork out on a player they once owned, but if the club isn’t Leeds, they risk Caprile moving to a Premier League rival and impressing, whilst they still seemingly search for a safe pair of hands to be United’s number one for years to come.

Data suggests Elia Caprile has been far better than Lucas Perri this season

Considering Leeds forked out a reported £13m for Perri in the summer, the fact that a goalkeeper they once had on their books is drastically outperforming their marquee signing will undoubtedly be embarrassing for the 49ers.

According to stats courtesy of DataMB, Caprile is outperforming Perri in every statistic aside from passes completed.

For the 49ers to save themselves from further humiliation, they would be better off putting their hands in their pockets to bring Caprile back to West Yorkshire rather than letting him go to another Premier League side.
