49ers ready to capitalise on La Liga outfit’s desperation to land £65k-a-week star at Leeds

Leeds United head into the January transfer window with a more defined plan, prioritising attacking reinforcements as they look to reinforce their push for Premier League survival.

A recent improvement in results has brought greater stability and eased some of the pressure on Daniel Farke, though doubts persist over the overall balance of the squad as the season reaches its midpoint.

Those issues have been sharpened by tactical adjustments. The move to a 5-3-2 formation has increased the demand for another striker, while also highlighting the possible need for defensive reinforcements.

Daniel Farke is also keen to add a versatile attacking midfielder who can play multiple roles, and Ruben Vargas is a name that has often popped up on Leeds’ radar ahead of the transfer window.

Leeds United can get Ruben Vargas due to Sevilla’s desperation

Vargas has been heavily linked with a move to Leeds over the last couple of months. The forward is up for sale at Sevilla this month.

Leeds will face competition for his signature from Bournemouth and Sunderland, who have also been keeping tabs on the Sevilla attacker ahead of the ongoing window.

The Whites may have a decent chance of landing him, as Vargas is likely to cost less than he should due to the financial issues at the Spanish club.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Sevilla are in dire need of a major sale before the end of the ongoing winter transfer window.

The Spanish club’s finances are not in order, and they need a major sale to balance their books, with Vargas seen as a player who could bring in decent money.

Vargas, who has scored three times and registered four assists in La Liga this season, recently returned to action after recovering from a hamstring injury.

49ers must not squander this opportunity

Sevilla’s financial situation means Leeds now have a decent chance of signing Vargas for a reasonable transfer fee in the ongoing window.

He has seven-goal contributions in La Liga this season despite a hamstring injury, which kept him out of action for a number of weeks towards the end of 2025.

The Spanish club are likely to accept a fee less than the £10m mark, which should be affordable for Leeds, given they are set to move on a high-earner in Jack Harrison.

The 49ers must not let this opportunity slip away to land a player who could slot in several positions in Daniel Farke’s 5-3-2 system at Elland Road.
