49ers should avoid bringing Newcastle United ace to Elland Road in January – he’s not good enough

Jamaal Lascelles Leeds United

Leeds United had an injury scare a few weeks ago when Joe Rodon had to go off against Sunderland following two crunching tackles from the opponents. It was around that time that the club saw a need to look for defensive cover.

But since that time, Rodon has returned to the lineup and there has been no update on if a defender will arrive this month. Leeds look quite thin at center back, and when Rodon was out, Daniel Farke suggested using James Justin and Sam Byram in defence to replace him.

Fortunately for the team, Sebastiaan Bornauw, who was signed in the summer and barely saw any action for most of the season, delivered when called upon. The Belgian showed his quality with solid displays against Manchester United and Liverpool. And since then, it looks like Leeds have dropped the search for defensive reinforcements, rather focusing on completing a deal for Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Leeds United should not sign Jamaal Lascelles

Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles has become available on the market this month; after being on the bench for most of the season. The 32-year old was the main man at St. James’ Park a couple of seasons ago, but has been phased out of the team by more quality players. There has been a link to Leeds United, and it looks like the defender will leave before the close of the window.

Jamaal Lascelles Last Five PL Seasons
Season Games Games Missed

2024/25 0 61
2023/24 16 6
2022/23 7 1
2021/22 26 27

Chronicle Live are reporting that Eddie Howe’s side have pulled him from training as they continue to anticipate an offer in the coming days. Leeds have not made an approach yet, but anything can happen as the window draws closer.

Whites can do better than Newcastle man

Danilho Doekhi, who was a target earlier in this window, is a still an option for Leeds United even though Aston Villa have now joined the race. The Dutch defender is at the right age, and can be signed for cheap as his contract expires in the summer. Lascelles should never be an option for Leeds United; he is past it, and can barely stay fit. His wages are also enormous, so brining in a player who will just eat up your wage bill would be a baffling start to the year.
