49ers will be laughing as ex-Everton chief makes painful Dominic Calvert-Lewin admission

Everton Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Leeds United fans were baffled when the club failed to land any of their big name targets and rather ended up with two free agent center forwards.

The arrivals of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha were met with very mixed reactions. Across the summer, the Whites were linked with big names like Rodrigo Muniz, Nikola Krstovic and even Callum Wilson.

Halfway into the season, these two signings have now proved that they are good enough for the Premier League. Calvert-Lewin has scored seven goals this season, and is one of the highest-scoring English players. Nmecha has also done his bit with four goals, and is the second top scorer for the club.

Everton news emerges about Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness reveals why Dominic Calvert-Lewin probably rejected a new deal from the Toffees, before joining Leeds United this summer:

“I was so sorry it didn’t work out for him at Everton in terms of negotiations, because I think he would have been what we’d have needed right now at Everton.” he said speaking on Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast.

“But he obviously had a view. And I think that Everton wanted to say, well, look, we might give you more of a pay-per-play related bonus situation rather than a straightforward higher salary, which I think he wanted.”

49ers got one of the best deals of the summer

Looking across the league, the 49ers should be very proud of signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He has delivered despite a slow start to the campaign; and has proven to be value for money. Many fans complained about his injury record and wages, but he seems to have silenced the doubters.

Daniel Farke also deserves a lot of credit for this; he backed the former Everton man even during his goal drought. And the new 3-5-2 system has allowed Leeds to have more bodies in the box, closer to Calvert-Lewin. The team benefits from his hold up play, bringing others into the attack. Things seem to be clicking since the striker went on his goalscoring form, and fans should hope that it continues – his goals could be what keep the club up at the end of the campaign.
