Leeds United are approaching the January transfer window in good form. However, Daniel Farke is keen to bring in a few players in January.
The Leeds manager is aware that his squad will need strengthening in certain areas to sustain for the rest of the season and continue to be ahead of teams in the relegation zone.
With Leeds now playing a 5-3-2, the squad need one more striker as Lukas Nmecha is struggling with injuries, and Farke doesn’t trust Joel Piroe enough to play him alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin from the start.
However, Leeds need sales to fund arrivals, and the club could have a big chance to bring in a huge fee if they decided to make an important sacrifice in the January transfer window.
Manchester City want Leeds United teenage sensation Harry Gray
The teenage striker comes from the famous line of Grays who have won accolades for Leeds, including his elder brother Archie Gray, who joined Tottenham last year.
He made his debut at 16 last season, and Daniel Farke has been trying to religiously shield the young forward from the spotlight in the ongoing campaign.
However, Leeds may soon have a huge decision to make as Manchester City are plotting to take the young striker to the Etihad in the upcoming transfer window.
Manchester City have identified him as a top young talent who signed a new contract at Leeds recently, and are keen to poach him from Elland Road.
The Premier League giants are prepared to offer as much as £40m and even allow Kalvin Phillips to return to Elland Road as part of a deal soon.
They are serious about getting their hands on him and are determined to convince the striker to pursue his career in East Manchester.
Leeds are not in a position to turn down £40m for an unproven talent
Leeds managing director, Robbie Evans, admitted at the end of the summer transfer window that they maxed out their PSR spending. Any more transfer outlay would have required significant sales.
The club decided to keep most of their important players, and Leeds didn’t earn much from player sales last summer, despite several departures.
However, any spending in January would require sales, and Leeds are considering cashing in on players such as Wilfried Gnonto, who has made a difference from the bench.
But the potential of getting as much as £40m from the potential departure of Harry Gray would solve several problems for Leeds United in January.
He is an academy product, so it would be a pure profit, and would open up avenues for Farke to really bring in difference makers in the winter window.
However, Leeds fans would hate it as there are huge hopes on Harry, and he is genuinely seen as someone who is a future superstar.
His surname also automatically builds a connection with the Leeds fans, and the club only sold his brother in 2024 for purely financial reasons.
However, Leeds must look at cold, hard facts and make a calculated decision. Harry is a huge talent, but is unproven and has done nothing at the top level.
Leeds could earn more from his departure a few years later if he realises his potential. However, there is no guarantee that he will make it, and the club could get nothing from his departure.
Manchester City would be overspending if they decide to fork out £40m for someone who is while talented, is completely unproven at the top level.
Leeds could solve several problems if they bite the bullet and sell Harry in January.
Not enough money.
