Leeds United are flying high after beating Sheffield United 3-1 at Bramall Lane on Monday night. They now have a five-point lead at the top of the Championship table and have a seven-point buffer in the automatic promotion race. While they have another 12 games remaining in the league season, Leeds are now almost certain to get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the campaign. They will aim to go another inch closer with a win over West Brom at home on Saturday. However, a former White has issued a warning against Leeds as he prepares to wear opposition colours this weekend.
The sense of anticipation of Leeds United getting promoted to the Premier League is palpable around Elland Road and they are now expected to become a top-flight club again next season.
Leeds boss Daniel Farke has been trying hard to keep the players grounded and focused for the remaining 12 games of the season but if you are a Whites fan, it is hard not to get excited.
They still have a few tough games and West Brom on Saturday will not be any pushovers as they are sitting fifth in the table and are looking to secure a playoff spot.
West Brom also have a player from the Leeds academy in Alex Mowatt who has been a key figure for the Baggies this season and in their push to finish in the top six.
The former Leeds star has set his eyes on pouring some cold water on the celebratory mood around Elland Road when the two sides meet on Saturday.
‘We are going to Elland Road to win’ – Former Leeds United star
West Brom are a tough side in the Championship and will pose some challenge to Leeds on Saturday despite the latter being at Elland Road where they have been imperious this season.
The Baggies are very much in a close race for a playoff spot and a poor result at Elland Road could be detrimental to their hopes of finishing in the top six.
Mowatt came through the Leeds academy and will now be in the opposition when he visits West Yorkshire on Saturday, and he is looking forward to playing in front of the fans.
In his previous visit to Elland Road as an opposition, there were no fans at Elland Road due to Covid, so the midfielder is keen to feel that energy again.
The former White conceded that it is going to be a difficult game for West Brom given Leeds’ home form but stressed that Baggies are aiming to get all three points at Elland Road.
“I’m excited. It’s the first time I’ll have played with fans there”, Mowatt told West Brom’s in-house media.
“It is going to be a tough game, they’re flying so it’s going to be difficult. We want to play our style and we go to the game wanting to win the game.”
Mowatt will find Leeds show no mercy at home
The ex-Leeds star should get a good reception from the home fans but that is where the pleasantries will likely end for the current West Brom player.
Leeds have been ruthless at home this season and no one expects anything different when West Brom visit Elland Road on Saturday with a home win expected on the cards.
The Whites have lost just one game at home this season and they have shifted a few gears in the last few weeks, which has been clear to identify in their performances.
Can you name these past and present Leeds United players?
West Brom will sit back and look to hit the home side on the break. However, Leeds have shown in recent games that they are willing to be patient to break down an opposition.
Mowatt can talk about beating Leeds at home but no team other than Burnley have done that this season and the Whites have been scoring for fun lately.
He and his team will likely leave Elland Road with nothing in their bag with Leeds expected to get one more win and edge closer to securing automatic promotion.
