Archie Gray linked with Leeds United return

Leeds United sold Archie Gray this summer for a reported £30million to Tottenham Hotspurs.

The teenage midfielder shone in his breakout season as Leeds United came close to Premier League promotion. Gray was named in the EFL Championship team of the season in 2023/24.

The midfielder is highly regarded as one of the best prospects to come out of the Leeds United academy. A lot of fans were disappointed when Gray left the club, but club chairman Paraag Marathe hinted earlier this year that the club would need a big sale after failing to win promotion:

“If I can paint the big picture for you, there are certain things we need to do and we will make sure we are fully compliant with P&S as we always have been, and there are certain trade-offs that we have to make. We will get to the drawing board and figure out which moves we have to make to make sure we are compliant. It is too early to say, obviously Archie is a tremendous player, as all the players who have put so much effort in for us, but every season brings change. I can’t yet comment on it, but we’ll see what happens.”

Gray has played for Spurs in the EFL cup and Europa league this season. However he has barely played in the Premier League; a total of just 56 minutes.

Journalist Ekrem Konur has now reported that Spurs could possibly listen to loan offers for the midfielder, with Leeds looking the most likely to capitalize.

Daniel Farke could turn to Gray after one of Leeds’ main midfield targets is reportedly off the table in January.

Midfielder would be the perfect January signing

Leeds United lost Ethan Ampadu and Illia Gruev earlier this season and have had to rely on Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell for most of the campaign. Because of this, Leeds signed Josuha Guilavogui on a free to ease the burden in midfield.

With Ampadu now in training following recovery, and Gruev probably out for the rest of 2024, Archie Gray could fill this gap in midfield.

He knows the club, and has played under Daniel Farke. The move would benefit Spurs, who currently play Gray at fullback because of the number of first team options.
