Aston Villa ‘overtake’ Leeds United in pursuit of Bundesliga ace – it could prove to be costly

Danilho Doekhi

Leeds United have gone very quiet in this transfer window over the last few weeks. The Whites surprised everyone when they signed Facundo Buonanotte and made an enquiry for a Premier League striker.

The club are still in talks with Wolves over a deal for Jorgen Strand Larsen; their last offer was close to the £40 million asking price but nothing has been confirmed yet. Seeing the moves Leeds are making, the fanbase can be assured that the ownership have ambition.

Last year in the Championship, the Whites did not make any major moves in January as they won promotion and lifted the league title. This time around, it looked like they had to respond as their relegation rivals splashed cash on new arrivals.

Aston Villa join race for Leeds United target Danilho Doekhi

Jorgen Strand Larsen and Facundo Buonanotte are not the only names Leeds have been linked with this month. Werder Bremen attacking midfielder Romano Schmid was a serious option, but reports suggest that something changed, and the club do not feel like pursuing the deal. Another Bundesliga player strongly linked with a move to Elland Road has been Danilho Doekhi.

The Union Berlin man was keen on a move to England according to sources, but his club did not want to lower his valuation for Leeds United. It has now emerged that Aston Villa are serious contenders for the defender. BILD are reporting that Unai Emery’s side want a cut price deal for the 27-year old, who is out of contract in the summer.

Deal could be costly for the Whites

Nothing has progressed on the deal for Danilho Doekhi so far, with it looking like Leeds United are happy with their current set of defenders. This could be quite problematic; Sebastiaan Bornauw filled in on Monday night against Everton and looked very shaky. He was at fault for the Thierno Barry equalizer which eventually cost his side maximum points. Defensive cover should have been priority when Joe Rodon went down with an injury a few weeks ago, but it seems like the 49ers are focused on adding reinforcements at the other end of the pitch. Whether that is the best decision will depend on how the team do between now and the end of the season. Doekhi is a quality player who would have added a lot of quality, but if Leeds prefer their current options, they have to stick with them.
