One profile that Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has been intent on adding to the team is a number 10. Last season, he missed out on signing Gus Hamer during the summer window.
Leeds then had to go with Brenden Aaronson for most of the season. The American had his most productive campaign to date, but there are still question marks over his ability to translate that at the Premier League level. And it looks like this summer, the Whites will continue the search for that player profile.
With a possible change in formation to more of a 4-3-3, the number ’10’ will now have to be comfortable playing deeper in midfield as a number 8. There has been a lot of talk this summer surrounding two major targets, Emi Buendia and Gus Hamer. Graeme Bailey gave an update on the situation over a week ago:
“They’re interested in Buendia and Hamer for the number 10 role too, I think they’re waiting for that one to unfold.
“As it stands with Buendia, the deal Villa want is not acceptable for Leeds, but I think that one will change.”

Since last week, links involving Mateus Fernandes have been growing. Multiple reports suggest that the midfielder wants to leave the Championship club this summer. Leeds have been linked, as they have had their eye on the midfielder for a while. But now, Aston Villa have also joined the race according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
The 21-year old is keen on a return to the Premier League this summer. Fernandes is currently with the Saints in preseason.
Player could move abroad
This news comes after reports that Fernandes was considering a move outside England. Atletico Madrid and Juventus are also interested in the Portuguese midfielder.
Earlier this summer, there were reports that his price tag was around £30million, but with multiple clubs interested, he could go for more money. His former club Sporting Lisbon also have a 10% sell on clause, which will be a factor in negotiations.
Fernandes would be a solid option
The 21-year old could come in and be an immediate starter in midfield. He would be the only Leeds midfielder whose game is tailored for being an attacking number 8. Fernandes is a physical midfielder, who can carry the ball up the pitch.

The Portuguese star is also dynamic, creative on the ball, and can chip in with goals when needed. If the fee is right, Leeds need to go in for a deal.
