Leeds United are pushing to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League with eight games remaining in the Championship season. The Whites are hoping their best players will return fit and ready for the Swansea game at Elland Road on Saturday. However, there are worrying signals about the severity of the injury to a key player.
Daniel Farke and the Leeds United squad are preparing for the big game against Swansea and will look to provide a response after a run of two wins in their last five league fixtures.
Leeds are still top of the Championship table but their automatic promotion ambition has come under fire from critics following a patchy run of form.
The Whites expect to have Ethan Ampadu back in action sooner than expected, but they are sweating over the fitness of another key player this week.
Journalist indicates Leeds United star’s injury could be serious
Wilfried Gnonto returned from the break early last weekend after he picked up an ankle injury while playing for the Italy Under-21s in a friendly last week.
Leeds are carrying out scans on the player and have kept their counsel, with Daniel Farke expected to provide more information on the winger’s injury in his press conference later this week.
However, journalist Michael Normanton indicated that it could be a serious injury as it was bad enough for him to return to Leeds rather than continue with the Italy Under-21s.
“Bad enough that he came straight back to England”, Normanton said on the Square Ball Podcast.
“No, I have not seen the injury.”
It could be a serious setback for Leeds
All eyes will be on Farke and what he has to say about Gnonto’s injury when he sits for his pre-match press conference at Thorp Arch this week.
Gnonto played well in the number 10 role against QPR just ahead of the breaks and there were suggestions he could replace Brenden Aaronson in the team during the run-in.
Can you name these 10 former Leeds United players?
However, all that is now up in the air as the winger has sustained an ankle injury and the club are now assessing the extent of the injury he picked up.
The Italian lost his place in the starting eleven in December, but if he is ruled out for the rest of the season, it could be a serious blow to Leeds’ promotion hopes.
Leeds fans will keep their fingers crossed and hope the injury is not as serious and he could be ready to come back into the team soon.
