‘Bloody knees and a scratched face’ – Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw gives honest debut verdict on Harry Gray

Harry Gray made his senior debut for Leeds United towards the end of last season at just 16 years old, but he didn’t feature again for the Whites before he left the club on loan this month.

As the latest talent to emerge from the well-known Gray family, his progress has naturally attracted extra scrutiny, with the 17-year-old striker continuing his development largely out of the spotlight.

Daniel Farke has been keen to manage expectations, repeatedly emphasising his desire to shield the teenager from unnecessary pressure. Despite regularly training with the first team, Gray was not called upon this season.

His omission from Leeds’ FA Cup win over Derby County appeared to hint at a shift in plans, and he completed a loan move from Leeds to League One side Rotherham United last week.

The 17-year-old forward played the full 90 minutes in Rotherham United’s 3-2 away defeat at Stockport on Saturday, in his first taste of senior football since last season.

Gray did not find the net or register an assist. However, the appearance still proved to be a valuable learning experience, giving him a full 90 minutes of senior football, even if it came at League One level.

Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw feels that, despite not contributing to a goal, the teenager performed well against Stockport, given his young age.

He pointed out that Gray did endure some battle marks after his first 90 minutes in senior football, and it will stand him in good stead.

The Rotherham boss was quoted as saying by the Yorkshire Post: “I thought Harry was good, considering he’s 17.

“Harry’s got bloody knees, a scratched face and all the rest of it, but that’ll do him good.”

Joining Rotherham was a gamble for Gray

Leeds supporters have already voiced concerns about the decision to loan the young striker to a League One side battling near the bottom of the table.

However, it has since emerged that the move was driven by Gray himself, with the teenager opting to leave Leeds and choosing Rotherham United as his destination.

Harry Gray’s in-game contribution against Stockport
Touches 30
Unsuccessful touches 6
Dribbles (successful) 1 (0)
Fouls won 3
Possession lost 15
Key passes 2

It is a bold decision and one that may surprise some fans, as he has backed himself to make an impact at a struggling League One club.

Rotherham United’s attacking numbers are fairly modest, and goals are likely to be hard-earned against some physically demanding defenders in the division.

While Leeds fans will be hoping to see him thrive during the loan spell, Gray has taken a significant risk, placing confidence in his ability and goalscoring instincts to succeed in a challenging environment.

Brave decision from Gray, hope we get to see him play for us someday before someone takes him away.
