How Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson returned to favour at the club is a complex story. The USMNT midfielder spent a season away on loan in the Bundesliga.
There were even rumours that he would leave Elland Road in the summer of 2024. His loan spell at Union Berlin did not earn him any plaudits either. What saved him was the fact that Daniel Farke was looking for a specific profile to play as the number 10.
“I think it’s fair to say if there is a creative offensive player out there, like a number 10 position, then it is something that could be beneficial for our group,”
“If there is a solution for a creative midfield player it definitely make sense to stay awake.”
Farke spent that summer trying to recruit a number 10, including bidding for Gus Hamer, but a move fell through. And Aaronson was first choice for the rest of the season.

He had a productive campaign, with nine goals and two assists. But his overall play has never quite captivated Leeds United fans. Rumours have spread that a new attacking midfielder is on the shortlist this summer.
Names like Gus Hamer, and Emi Buendia have been mentioned. Sheffield United failed to win promotion, making Hamer a realistic option. But according to Graeme Bailey, Emi Buendia looks like the favourite choice for Daniel Farke:
“…In terms of who they sign, I think the number 10 will be Hamer or Buendia, I think it’ll be one of those two.
“It might be Hamer because he’ll end up being cheaper, but [Daniel] Farke likes Buendia an awful lot so that might go a long way. Does his injury record go against him? Possibly.
“I think he or Buendia will go there and that might see [Brendan] Aaronson move on actually.”
Upgrade has been needed on Aaronson
Brenden Aaronson is a decent player, but what he lacks is what Leeds United need. The Whites need a player who can provide that creative spark to get the team out of tight situations. Someone who can grab a game and turn it on his head, this trait will be very important in the top flight. If Aaronson does not have that trait, then it is better to add an attacking midfielder who can.
