Burnley and Leeds dominate list of most expensive summer signings in the Championship

Leeds United made the most of selling key players from last season, investing funds back into the squad and making expensive signings to ensure that this campaign, the club earns promotion to the Premier League.

This past summer transfer window, The Whites sold Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, and Crysencio Summerville, among other players. As a result, the club had to figure out how to spend the money earned from these sales to replace the players lost.

Rather than spreading out the funds, Leeds went big time spending for impactful players to help their squad this season. Three of Leeds’ newest players ranked among the most expensive signings by a Championship side this past summer as ownership invested to ensure this campaign leads to promotion.

List of most expensive Championship signings

TEAMTalk put together the list of expensive signings from Championship clubs, with Joe Rodon, Largie Ramazani, and Jayden Bogle in the top 10.

While Leeds spent a lot of money, they were outdone by Burnley, who flexed their financial muscle this summer to ensure they also earn promotion this campaign after being relegated from the Premier League last season.

Here’s a look at the entire list of expensive signings:

9. Joe Worrall (Burnley) – £5 million

9. Jayden Bogle (Leeds United) – £5 million

7. Hannibal Mejbri (Burnley) – £5.4 million

6. Ante Crnac (Norwich City) – £8.5 million

5. Largie Ramazani (Leeds United) – £9.9 million

4. Mark McGuinness (Luton Town) – £10 million

4. Joe Rodon (Leeds United) – £10 million

2. Maxime Esteve (Burnley) – £10.1 million

1. Mike Tresor (Burnley) – £16 million

It will be interesting to see if taking out the checkbook brings Burnley and Leeds the promotion they want at the end of this season. Nonetheless, through four matchdays, neither of the two clubs are in the top two spots for automatic promotion to the Premier League next season.

Currently, Leeds are fourth, and Burnley are sixth, but the season is early, and eventually, the talent that these two clubs brought in this summer will begin to gel. They’ll subsequently climb up the table to avoid the uncertainty of the playoffs as Leeds learned last season.
