Championship manager to be charged following Leeds United game – FA to crack down on comments

Leeds United have had their fair share of refereeing controversies this season. The last one being two goals being ruled out for offside against Middlesbrough.

The goal being ruled out was so frustrating, as Boro could have equalized after it was disallowed. Nonetheless, Leeds still managed to sail through. The Whites then put together a winning run that ended on Monday, as they won promotion to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke was frustrated, and assistant referee Darren Williams was only downgraded to officiate in League One, rather than receive proper punishment.

Leeds United beat Oxford United 1-0 away from home on their way to promotion. After the game, U’s boss Gary Rowett complained about the officiating, later making a long rant in the post-match press conference:

“We’ve had it all season. We’ve had no penalties all season. You don’t quite get the rub of the green if you’re the smaller team, occasionally.”

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has said that Rowett will face sanctions for his comments. And that the FA will announce what will happen in the coming weeks:

“These comments aimed at the match official are clearly questioning the integrity of the Referee Dean Whitestone,” he said to MOT Leeds News.

“It serves no purpose for the manager, having had plenty of time to cool down before making this type of statement. Thirty minutes after the end of the game, he can be invited into the referee’s dressing room to discuss his concerns.

“He can communicate with the PGMOL and express his concerns should he wish. The FA, if aware of these remarks, will ask the manager for his observations.

“Once his response is made, I expect the FA to charge him. Watch this space.”

Leeds not on the end of refereeing controversy for once

Daniel Farke and Leeds will be happy that there was an incident in a game involving the whites that did not go against them. Darren Williams is yet to be officially sanctioned, but it looks like his errors will not be addressed any further now that Leeds have been promoted.

Fans should hope the club avoid refereeing controversy in the Premier League next season.
