Fans were surprised that Leeds United had only signed one center forward with just days till the end of the summer window. Lukas Nmecha was one of the first signings made in the off season.
The Whites had been linked with names like Rodrigo Muniz and Nikola Krstovic; everyone was expecting a big name striker. But getting towards the end of the transfer window, the links died down. Then Leeds eventually announced the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer.
The news was not really received well among the fanbase, with many concerned about his wages and injury issues. But so far, the striker has turned out to be one of the better signings the 49ers made going into this season.
Chris Sutton says he would have chosen Leeds United star for prestigious award
After a long goal drought, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has hit an incredible run of form for Leeds United. He has scored in four straight games, including big goals against the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City. Chris Sutton has been speaking about the striker after Rory McIlroy was named Sports Personality of the Year award.
The former Premier League star wrote in his BBC Sports column that if the Leeds striker had hit form earlier, that Sutton would have voted for him to win the award.
“If Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit this run of form a little bit earlier, he would have been my vote for Sports Personality of the Year.
“Four goals in four games, his leap to score against Brentford was incredible.”

Sutton’s claim far fetched, but striker is in great form
Personality of the Year is a stretch for Calvert-Lewin, but one thing is clear; he has been the best performer for the club over the last couple of weeks. Many doubted him during his goalless drought, and it even took Daniel Farke defending him in press conferences to take pressure off him.

Now, the striker is in rich form and has benefitted hugely from the new 3-5-2 system. Playing with an extra body beside him has made real use of his hold up play and ability to link with other players. This weekend, he has the chance to score in five consecutive games for Leeds United, but he will be up against Marc Guehi, who Jason Cundy has called the ‘best English defender’.
