It has been four years since Kalvin Phillips left Elland Road. After the midfielder became one of the core players in the team under Marcelo Bielsa, the big clubs came knocking.
It was only a matter of time before the Whites had to sell him. Phillips had some fantastic years in the Leeds shirt, even winning England Men’s national team player of the year along the road. But since the midfielder left the club, things have not gone as planned. He barely played for Manchester City and has been sent out on loan for every season since 2024.
But the news about a potential return to Elland Road never went away; almost every summer, the former Leeds star was linked with a return to his former club. And this was when Leeds were rebuilding after 2023, trying to make their way back into the Premier League.
Chris Wilder breaks silence on potential deal for Kalvin Phillips
After spending the first half of the season limited to cameos in cup competitions, Sheffield United signed Kalvin Phillips on loan for the rest of the season. His first two appearances showed that he still had the ability to play at a decent level. Then he was sent off against Sheffield Wednesday and things have gone from bad to worse. Phillips has yet to play a game since February as he recovers from injury.
A report from last week indicated that the Blades are keen on bringing back the 30-year old in the summer. Phillips is said to have made a huge impression on Wilder and the staff at Sheffield United, and they would be open to having him back again. When Wilder was asked about the possibility of a move for Kalvin Phillips this summer he told The Star: “Definitely. He’ll have a lot of people still after him. It was a fabulous move that Steve Bettis put together, with Man City, from our point of view.”

Phillip’s story is one Leeds United can learn from
Thought it is a bit sad how Phillips has become a shadow of himself, the midfielder is a story Leeds can continue to learn from. Sometimes selling your best players is the right thing to do. Looking at this summer, the Whites could survive the Premier League or get relegated. Either way, their best players will definitely attract interest; and looking at the recent PSR struggles, Leeds need to get the best deals possible when they come. Getting transfer revenue is the only way the club can stay competitive – ownership pumping money every season is not sustainable.
