Leeds United returned from the international break with a crucial 2-0 win over Sheffield United at Elland Road on Friday night, a key victory against a team likely to challenge for automatic Premier League promotion.

After a scoreless first half, Leeds took charge in the second. Pascal Struijk broke the deadlock in the 69th minute and the Whites added a second in the 90th, locking in all three points.

Illan Meslier also bounced back from the Sunderland draw, delivering a strong performance and keeping a clean sheet. So far this season, Leeds have drawn with West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, and Sunderland, while suffering a loss to Burnley.

But Daniel Farke’s side secured an important win over the Blades and now sit second in the Championship, though that could change depending on Saturday’s results. Burnley and West Brom could overtake Leeds with victories.

Chris Wilder offers impressive praise of Leeds

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder gave credit to Leeds for their impressive style of play, but more importantly, the gaffer noted that the Whites are by far the best side they have faced all season.

“I don’t think I’m being controversial when I say I think anybody who finishes above Leeds – and I’m not sure anybody will do from what we’ve seen of them, our analysis and the games they’ve played – (will win the league),” Wilder said (h/t The Yorkshire Post).

“They’ve dropped a couple of points, they dropped a point at Sunderland when it was game, set and match really, a smash-and-grab against Burnley (which they lost 1-0) and a couple of other games where they’ve dropped points but it’s early in the season.

“Daniel will recognise that as well and they’ll want to improve as much as we do. If they take a step back they’ll come forward. We have to take a step forward from our performance tonight.

“We have to reflect and go again. Leeds are by far and away the best team we’ve played all season.”
