Chris Wilder ‘sucks it up’ as pressure increases on Sheffield United – Leeds United take back control of promotion race

Leeds United moved back to the summit of the Championship table on Wednesday night with a 2-0 win over Millwall at Elland Road. The Whites were under some stress after dropping five points in their last two league games but Sheffield United and Burnley eased some of the pressure by drawing their respective games on Tuesday night and Leeds completed their end of the bargain against Millwall. Chris Wilder’s side squandered their opportunity this week and Leeds took full advantage to wrestle control back of the automatic promotion race.

The Whites are pushing hard to ensure that they earn automatic promotion to the Premier League but the race is tight ahead of the final nine games of the season.

Leeds United, Sheffield United and Burnley are involved in a three-way fight to finish in the top two spots and it is expected to go down to the wire in the next couple of months.

The Whites have a clear advantage in the race given the run of games they have, and Sheffield United and Burnley have to face each other once before the end of the season.

A draw at home against Bristol City on Tuesday night was not a result Wilder was expecting and Sheffield United are again looking up to Leeds after briefly going level on points with them last weekend.

Chris Wilder ‘sucks it up’ as Leeds United move two points clear at the top

Sheffield United looked poised to win all three points at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night, albeit narrowly, which would have put real pressure on the Whites in the promotion race.

However, Bristol City scored a deserving equaliser in the 90th minute to stop the home side from winning the game.

With Leeds United beating Millwall on Wednesday night, Sheffield United are again in a position where they have to hold on to the Yorkshire giants’ coattails.

However, Wilder is keen to look at the positive aspect of the result and admitted that it could end up being a crucial point for his side in the grand scheme of things.

The Sheffield United boss stressed that there is little his team can do but to accept the result and prepare for the Steel City derby against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

“It might be an important point, it keeps us ticking along. It’s not what we wanted but it’s another point”, Wilder was quoted as saying by the Northern Echo.

“We have to suck it up, take our medicine and move on to Sunday.”

Leeds are again back in control of the promotion race and their destiny

After dropping five points against West Brom and Portsmouth in back-to-back games, Leeds fans were feeling a sense of deja-vu and dreaded the prospect of dropping into the playoff spots.

Sheffield United and Burnley dropping the ball on Tuesday night helped and Leeds drove home their advantage by producing a commanding win over Millwall on Wednesday night.

After feeling jittery for a few days, the sense of confidence is back in the Leeds fanbase ahead of the final nine games of the season in the Championship.

Leeds would want to beat QPR on the road this weekend to get into the international break as Championship leaders but it appears they are back in control of the automatic promotion race.

They have been the most consistent team this season and the last few days have shown that their rivals lack the consistency to take advantage of the blip Leeds suffered recently.

The Whites are again looking like the team who will get promoted to the Premier League as Championship winners.
