Club Pays Tribute to Peter Gunby OBE

Leeds United have paid tribute to ex-coach and much loved figure Peter Gunby OBE. Gunby sadly passed away at the age of 87 last week and was a key figure for the club throughout the 1980’s, taking caretaker charge of the club on two occasions in 1985 and 1988.

Born in Leeds Gunby spent his playing days with Leeds United, Bradford City and Harrogate Town before turning his attention to coaching and spent much of his time helping to develop players at former club Harrogate, as well as Huddersfield Town.

In an official statement, the club say “For all his services on the pitch and at the side of it, Peter was a hugely popular figure off it as well. Around the training ground, his infectious personality and caring attitude was memorable to all who encountered him.”

Gunby is perhaps best known for his work done with the academy, helping to accommodate young players by refurbishing Bill Fotherby’s house alongside wife Maureen and ensuring the house was kept up to standard by all who lived there, whilst personally helping with meals and housekeeping.

Leeds add that “Peter ensured all standards were high and not only helped to develop footballers, but his efforts in developing exceptional personal traits in young professionals has seen him fondly remembered by many stars of the game.”

After the end of his career in the game and for all his services towards it Gunby was awarded an OBE in 2007.

Leeds finish the statement saying “All at Leeds United are saddened by Peter’s loss and send our very best wishes to his family, friends, colleagues and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
