SC Freiburg would have preferred to sell Leeds United target Roland Sallai in the summer transfer window due to financial reasons but the player turned down the offer to move to Elland Road.

Following the sale of Crysencio Summerville to West Ham in the summer, Leeds were in the market for wingers and several players were on their shortlist of targets.

Sallai was one of the preferred targets for Leeds and the club pushed hard to take him to Elland Road in the last summer transfer window.

However, their attempts didn’t lead to the Hungarian moving to West Yorkshire and he stayed put at Freiburg beyond the end of the window.

The German club would have preferred to cash in on Roland Sallai

According to German magazine Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), Freiburg would have preferred to bring in the cash from the sale of Sallai to Leeds in the summer.

However, the winger decided against taking up the offer from Leeds and made the call to stay put at Freiburg this season.

The Hungarian’s decision is now causing a few financial headaches for the German club who were keen to sell the player.

With Sallai’s contract expiring at the end of the ongoing season, this was the last chance for Freiburg to bring in a considerable fee from his departure.

Freiburg’s attempts to sell him were thwarted by the player himself who was not keen on joining Leeds.

He is now in a position to agree a pre-contract with a club in January and leave Freiburg on a free transfer next year, a situation the German club were keen to avoid.
