Former Leeds United defender Liam Cooper is set to earn a considerable amount of money in the first part of his contract at CSKA Sofia.
The 33-year-old centre-back left Leeds at the end of last season when his contract with the Yorkshire giants expired in the summer.
Cooper spent a decade at Leeds since joining the club from Chesterfield in 2014 and was captain of the team that got promoted to the Premier League in 2020.
Despite his declining powers towards the end of his time at Elland Road, he remained an important part of the dressing room and was appreciated by everyone.
Cooper agreed to join CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria on a free transfer this month and has signed a three-year contract with them.
Liam Cooper has agreed lucrative contract with his new team
The veteran defender stayed firm during negotiations with CSKA Sofia and despite the club’s reluctance, he convinced them to give him a three-year deal.
According to the Bulgarian Telegraph, the defender is set to earn as much as €800,000 per year on a three-year deal with CSKA Sofia.
Cooper and his representatives did well during negotiations to extract as much money as possible from the Bulgarian giants in the summer.
He earned a €100,000 signing bonus when he joined and signed a contract worth €50,000 per month with the club, which would see him earn €600,000 in wages per year.
CSKA Sofia have also agreed to pay €50,000 each in two tranches by the end of next year so Cooper will take home €800,000 from the first part of his contract.
The fact that he was a free agent made sure he earned a healthy pay package from CSKA Sofia as they saved money on any transfer fee.
The defender spoke to former Leeds teammate Ilia Gruev before agreeing to a move to Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia.
He never played outside England apart from internationals before joining the Eastern European side.
