Daniel Farke deserves huge credit if Tony Cascarino is right about Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Dominic Calvert-Lewin extended his Premier League goal-scoring run to five consecutive matches as the striker scored twice during Leeds’ 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach rounded off the scoring to give Leeds more valuable breathing room from the relegation zone.

There has been a lot of speculation regarding Calvert-Lewin and whether he can make a late push to be a part of the England World Cup squad next summer as a result of his recent form.

This is a testament to all the good work Farke and his staff have done with the 28-year-old to get him back to his best, and if Tony Cascarino’s latest claims regarding Calvert-Lewin are true, then Farke and Co. deserve even more praise than initially anticipated.

Tony Cascarino makes bold Dominic Calvert-Lewin claim – ‘he’s changed’

Despite it being December, Calvert-Lewin’s seven Premier League goals this season make it the joint third most prolific campaign of his career so far.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 21 December, Cascarino claimed that as long as the forward stays fit, he will guarantee Leeds a respectable amount of goals.

Calvert-Lewin has already made 11 starts for the Whites this season, and Cascarino feels as though a change in the Englishman’s physique is the reason behind his increased availability.

  • Calvert-Lewin was limited to just 19 Premier League starts during his final season at Everton

“I looked at the shape of his body (at Everton), and it’d looked like a guy that had been in the gym too much.

“If you’re going to the gym all the time and you’re doing leg weights and upper body, and he kept getting injured. I don’t know if he’s changed his work ethic around his training, but he doesn’t look as bulky as he once was.

“I’d love to ask him the question, ‘Have you changed your training programme at Leeds and kept away from that gym?'”

If Cascarino’s suspicions are correct and Calvert-Lewin has changed his training regime, then Farke and the medical staff deserve an immense amount of praise for keeping their striker fit and firing so far this season.

It wouldn’t be the first time Leeds kept an injury-prone player fit

One only needs to look back at last season for an example of United keeping a historically injury-prone player in Manor Solomon fit for the bulk of the campaign.

  • Prior to joining Leeds, Solomon had made just six league starts in the previous two seasons
  • During his loan spell in West Yorkshire, Solomon started 30 Championship matches

Despite concerns from supporters over his injury record, the winger ultimately went on to be one of Leeds’ most important players last season as they won promotion, with Solomon even scoring the winning goal on the final day against Plymouth to clinch the Championship title.

For the time being, it looks as though history could be set to repeat itself if Calvert-Lewin can continue to stay fit and contribute to keeping the Whites in the Premier League, just as Solomon did to fire Leeds out of the Championship.
