Leeds United dropped more points on Saturday when they conceded a late equaliser to earn only a point from a 2-2 draw at home against Swansea City. It was another disastrous performance from goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who dropped one more clanger and cost the Whites more crucial Championship points. However, it has been claimed that Daniel Farke needs to carry the blame for the result.
With seven games remaining in the Championship season, Leeds are again imploding like last year and there is now a real feeling they could again miss out on automatic promotion.
Following the weekend’s results, Leeds have slipped down to second in the table and are now level on points with Burnley, who sit third in the Championship standings.
Meslier’s performance has again come under the scanner, but journalist Dan Moylan has insisted that it is Daniel Farke who needs to carry the can for his lack of foresight this season.
Daniel Farke has opted for vibes over tough decisions
It is not the first time Meslier has cost Leeds points this season, but Farke has steadfastly supported the Frenchman despite all his mistakes this season.
Moylan insisted that the French goalkeeper is not good enough and the Leeds boss needs to carry the can for deciding to support him and keep him in the team despite all the logic suggesting that he should have been dropped a while ago.
He stressed that Farke’s go-to policy is to opt for vibes over taking those tough calls, and if Leeds do not get promoted this season, the blame would be on the manager’s door for the decisions he didn’t make.
“He is just not good enough”, Moylan went on a passionate rant on the Square Ball Podcast.
“And Farke, in sticking with Meslier, will be responsible for us not going up because it has cost us double-digit points this season, and that’s the end.
“We should be nearly up by now, and we are not because of Meslier.
“Farke has insisted on vibes and consistency over making tough decisions at times, and ultimately, he will live and die because of those decisions.
“Those are decisions that will cost us promotion if we do not go up from here, and it will be his fault.”
The Leeds boss will have to answer some tough questions
Meslier has been a problem for Leeds all season, and it has been apparent for a while that he is no longer good enough to command a place in the team.
Leeds have a regular Wales international goalkeeper in their ranks in Karl Darlow, but he has not played a game in the Championship this season.
Can you name these past and present Leeds United players?
Darlow has been more or less elevated to the Wales number one slot. However, for reasons beyond anyone’s understanding, he has not been allowed to prove that he can be better than Meslier this season.
Farke has refused to change the goalkeeper between the sticks, and as we all know now, it has led to Leeds dropping precious Championship points.
Given the Leeds boss’ unwillingness to upset players, expect Meslier to play again when Leeds travel to Luton Town next Saturday, but it won’t be the right decision.
