Leeds United supporters are known for being one of the most vocal fans who have turned Elland Road into a fortress again this season. While pundits and former players have been complaining about the atmosphere inside stadiums at big clubs, it has not been a problem at Leeds and even Danny Murphy has acknowledged that.
Elland Road has again been a frightful place to visit for opposition teams this season and Leeds United have lost just one game in the Championship at home this term.
Leeds’ home form has been the bedrock of their promotion charge and it kept them in the mix when the Whites were struggling for results on the road at the start of the season.
The Whites also carry a loyal travelling support to games away from and they have been vocal and loud all season as Leeds have steadily improved their record on the road.
The Leeds United fans are ridiculous
Leeds fans are known for being passionate supporters across the world and they became part of a discussion earlier today at talkSPORT.
Veteran broadcaster Jim White, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan and Murphy were discussing and bemoaning the lack of atmosphere at big clubs.
The trio were discussing the influx of tourists at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge and how it has affected the atmosphere in games this season for the Premier League side.
It is a modern phenomenon but Murphy insisted that the away fans still bring a lot in terms of building atmosphere and praised the Leeds travelling contingent for their ‘ridiculous passion’.
“Leeds”, Murphy said on takSPORT.
“[The] Leeds travelling [fans] are ridiculous.
“With the away fans, you get a real togetherness. They have been going for years and they have got the love for the club.”
Elland Road still has the old-world charm of English football
More and more big clubs are moving into new stadiums, which have often been described as soulless bowls by their own fans because of the lack of atmosphere.
Leeds have announced plans for expanding Elland Road but the club have no plans to move away from the stadium, which has been their home since 1919.
Elland Road has the feel of the old football stadiums of England, which makes it a tough place to visit for opposition teams who get drowned out by the home fans.
Can you name these past and present Leeds United players?
Leeds’ atmosphere is down to the vocal support and the old-world setting of Elland Road, which has been going missing in English football for the last few years.
Murphy is right about the atmosphere inside stadiums getting diluted but that is unlikely to be a problem at Elland Road, even after it gets expanded in the coming years.
The Premier League will hope Leeds get promoted this season as they will only add to the iconography of the top flight with their presence.
