Dominic Calvert-Lewin receives major World Cup backing from former England star

Leeds United have managed to turn things around in the last couple of weeks. Not only have they been able to string together some results, but they are now slowly drifting away from the relegation zone.

A huge part of this has been Farke’s tactical shift to the 3-5-2 system which has made a huge difference on the pitch. Not on that, but the Leeds boss makes personnel changes that pay off in a big way. Using Brenden Aaronson in central roles has paid off in recent games, as well as introducing Jaka Bijol into the team.

One major factor of this successful run has been Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The striker has been in unstoppable form in the last few weeks, and he is consistently finding the back of the net.

Danny Murphy backs Leeds United star for World Cup berth

The former Everton man was on target this weekend as the club took a point away from the Stadium of Light. His form in the last few weeks have seen him be tipped for a return to the England National team. Though that is currently not on the table, the 28-year old has outscored most of the country’s attackers this season. Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that Calvert-Lewin is knocking on the door ahead of the World Cup.

“He looks as fit as he has in a long time,” Murphy said on BBC MOTD.

“That comes with playing consecutive games, scoring goals, then your confidence goes up as well. You can see he’s got that strut back, that kind of confidence and belief in himself. Nobody’s ever doubted his ability or attributes.

“If he maintains this level of form until the end of the season, then he’s going to be in a conversation for a World Cup place because his level at the moment is really high and he offers something different.

“He is fantastic in the air and could give teams real problems off the bench.”

Can Dominic Calvert-Lewin make the England squad?

Purely based on performance, he is one of the most in form players among England internationals. His eight goals in the Premier League makes him the top scorer among those players this season. Daniel Farke joked that Thomas Tuchel can give him a call if he wants the striker back in the fold.

Top English Scorers Premier League
Player Goals
Dominic Calvert-Lewin 8
Danny Welbeck 7
Phil Foden 7
Morgan Rogers 7
Jarrod Bowen 5
Ollie Watkins 5

But sometimes form like this is something you cannot ignore. Leeds are flying, and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin in this kind of form, there is every chance the Whites will survive this season.
