Leeds United are still leading the Championship race with eight games left in the season. However, the automatic promotion race has gotten tighter and Sheffield United and Burnley are running them close at the moment. However, the Whites are still the favourites and most are still expecting them to get the job done and get promoted to the Premier League in the next couple of months.

The Whites have 80 points on board, same as Sheffield United who are second and Burnley are behind the two Yorkshire giants in third in the Championship standings.

Their form has been patchy in recent weeks and Leeds United have won just two of their last five league games, which includes a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Leeds need to emerge from the international break firing on all cylinders and ensuring they do not stumble in some key games in the next couple of months.

However, Don Goodman, former West Brom, Sunderland and Wolves star, admitted that he would not be too worried if he were a Leeds fan at the business end of the season.

The run-in favours Leeds United – Don Goodman

While Leeds fans are getting increasingly nervous about their side dropping into the playoff spots, Goodman doesn’t appear too concerned at the moment for the Whites.

The former attacker insisted that he cannot see Leeds stumbling at this stage of the season and his confidence in them comes from their run of fixtures.

He pointed out Leeds have only lost one game against a side in the bottom half of the table this season and six of their next eight opponents are below 14th at the moment.

“Personally, I don’t see Leeds United slipping up”, Goodman told the Football League World.

“I think if you had asked me this question a little bit earlier in the season, it could possibly have been their away form, but I look at the games they have got left and six of their eight games are against sides that are 14th and below.

“With the exception of the away defeat at Portsmouth – which they probably didn’t deserve to lose – they haven’t lost a single game to any side in the bottom half of the table.

“So I think everything is in their favour, I think they are far and away the best team in the league still, despite losing to Portsmouth and drawing with Queens Park Rangers.

“They are going to take all the stopping, I give credit to Burnley and Sheffield United for making Leeds United sweat with eight games to go, but I still believe that they will go and win the league.”

Leeds must feel confident about their chances

Daniel Farke, who is under pressure, will look to keep his players focused and take one game at a time as his side push to secure automatic promotion in the next eight games.

Leeds will not take anyone lightly and their recent patchy results will only make them more focused for the final stretch of the season.

However, given their run-in, Leeds should be kicking themselves if they do not earn automatic promotion at this stage of the campaign. In fact, the Whites have a decent chance of touching the 100-point barrier if they play according to their potential.

Leeds have been the best team in the league and they could now really press the accelerator and drive home their advantage.

They must also remember Sheffield United and Burnley will have to play each other once more and that game could tilt the balance towards the Whites further.
