Losing Archie Gray resulted in Leeds United not earning promotion last season while also abiding by the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability rules. When the decision came to leave Elland Road, there’s a reason why he chose Tottenham Hotspur over any other club.
Gray appeared in 52 matches across all competitions for Leeds last season, contributing two assists. Despite his young age, he showed his versatility by playing as a right-back and taking on various roles in the midfield throughout the campaign.
This summer, Leeds said goodbye to Crysencio Summerville after his sale to West Ham United and Georginio Rutter leaving to join Brighton & Hove Albion. Meanwhile, Gray went to Spurs for reportedly about £30 million and signed a contract with the London-based club until 2030.
Eddie Gray reveals why Archie chose Tottenham
Eddie Gray spoke to the Daily Record and revealed the behind-the-scenes details regarding the teenager’s departure to Spurs and why the youngster chose the London-based club over any other Premier League side.
“He’s going to be working under a terrific manager,” Eddie said. “He likes the [Ange Postecoglou], he loves the manager. There were a few teams after him, but I think meeting the manager and how he conducted himself swung it for Archie. I think he’ll help Archie and I think he’ll do very well at Spurs.”
Gray has made two appearances for Tottenham so far this season as the player adapts to a new club and league. The teenager will look to live up to the potential Spurs believe the player has.
Moreover, in a recent interview, transfer expert Graeme Bailey stated that he felt gutted for Leeds supporters for having lost Gray, considering the player’s potential is through the roof.
“Losing someone who could’ve been the head of a golden generation at Leeds,” Bailey told LeedsUnited.News in an exclusive interview. “With Red Bull’s deal, did Leeds really need to lose Gray? I am not convinced and I am gutted for Leeds fans. There will be some younger Leeds fans who won’t even realise he’s not a right back. He could be the new Steven Gerrard, he’s that good.”
