Fleetwood Town would have played Leeds’ U21 side in the EFL Trophy on Wednesday night. The Cod Army boss Pete Wild thinks such a match provides the best chance to scout some young players from Thorp Arch.

“I think it is a real good idea, I think it prepares them for what real life is” he told Fleetwood TV.

“The amount that is going to actually play for their first teams in the Premier League is very small.

“So, they need to understand what the other side of football looks like.

“And, it is a good opportunity for us to have a look at what players might become available in the future, build relationships and links.

“So, I think it is a really good idea for football.”

Rory Mahady a shining example

Leeds youngster Rory Mahady recently starred for Scunthorpe after he joined them on loan. The club boss was full of praise for the young keeper after his debut, and praised the Whites for producing such a player.

“It’s a great debut, by the way, his distribution was class,” Butler said.

“When Rory came into the changing room, they gave him a standing ovation, which is brilliant for him.

“I mean, what an experience he’s got at his young age already. He’s got to come here. He’s made some great saves, by the way. He’s won, I think, low down, where he scooped it away.”

“It just shows you the pedigree he’s got at Leeds. Thank you, Leeds, so much for facilitating it, because without them, we’d have no goalkeeper,” he added.

“It’s great to be able to use a goalkeeper of that quality.”
