Leeds United’s unbeaten run came to an end in the cruellest of fashions as they were defeated 4-3 at St James’ Park by Newcastle United.
Despite the defeat on Tyneside, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance, such as Brenden Aaronson having his best-ever game in a Leeds shirt, with the American scoring two magnificent goals.
However, it was a brace from Harvey Barnes that ultimately won the game for the home side, with his second goal coming in the 102nd minute to break the hearts of all those who made the trip up from West Yorkshire.
United captain Ethan Ampadu broke his silence after the chaotic game by putting out a statement to the deflated supporters.
‘Fine margins’ – Ethan Ampadu reacts to Newcastle defeat
Naturally, with seven goals going in during the game, the match did not come without its controversy, with both Newcastle and Leeds supporters having their gripes with the referee.
Daniel Farke echoed this frustration, claiming the penalty that Newcastle were handed that led to Bruno Guimaraes scoring a 91st-minute equaliser should have never been given.
Ampadu reacted to the Whites’ seven-game unbeaten run being broken controversially by posting a statement on his Instagram story saying:
“Gave everything but fine margins we have to learn from. Thanks to everyone for the support.”
Data suggests Ethan Ampadu was impressive upon his return to the starting XI
Unfortunately for Leeds, they were without their skipper during their grudge match with Manchester United, with the midfielder being forced to miss the game through suspension.
However, the 25-year-old slotted straight back into the heart of the midfield against Newcastle, where his presence was clearly evident, as Ampadu further proved he is a Premier League-level midfielder.

With Leeds currently being in the midst of such a hectic schedule, it would be wise of Farke to rest key players like Ampadu for United’s upcoming FA Cup fixture against Derby on Sunday, so Leeds’ midfield general is not put at any unnecessary risk of injury.
