‘Even Arsenal and Manchester City cannot have better stats’ – Daniel Farke launches bizarre defence of Leeds United result

Before Saturday’s game, it was clear that Leeds United boss Daniel Farke had an unfortunate record when going up against Burnley. One win in his career since he arrived in England was a damning statistic.

There was a lot of optimism going into Turf Moor, besides, Burnley just had one win all season and had not won a game since August. Leeds on the other hand were in a decent run of form ahead of the game – only an unfortunate loss to Spurs derailed their strong run since the game against Fulham.

Injuries meant that Jack Harrison had to step into the starting lineup with the absence of Wilfried Gnonto and Noah Okafor. While Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Brenden Aaronson continued in the front three.

QUIZ: Can you name these 10 former Leeds United defenders?

The Whites could do nothing about the first Burnley goal as a great cross from Kyle Walker was met by Lesley Ugochukwu after just 18 minutes. Leeds missed a big chance to tie the game in the first half as they went into half time with the scores level. It was the second half that Daniel Farke’s men really dominated, and on another day should have had at least two goals.

Misses from Brenden Aaronson continued the poor run in front of goal that has cost the club points recently. Burnley sealed the game with a screamer from Loum Tchaouna in the second half – and that was game over.

In the post match press conference, Daniel Farke defended the result, saying that his side had more possession and better statistics. He thinks the team were ”let down” in both boxes, and that no club could come and dominate like Leeds did today:

“Went wrong in both boxes. Cannot have better stats than we did away from home today.

“Possession, shots, big chances, xG, corners. Even when Arsenal, Man City et al come here they will not repeat that.”

Leeds United boss needs to get a grip

This defence from Farke is inexcusable, his team were the favourites going into the tie and should have won. Burnley had one win all season, and now Leeds have given them another three points. The excuses are becoming too much from the German at this early stage of the season.
