Leeds United could be seeing a former youth product of the club playing for the England national team considering one pundit believes that the left-back position is there for anyone to take.
Leif Davis arrived at Leeds in 2018 and spent five years with The Whites, but couldn’t break through into the first team, making only 14 appearances across all competitions.
Davis would leave Leeds in 2021 on a loan stint with Bournemouth, but it was a brief stint. In 2022, he officially moved to Ipswich Town, and the move has allowed the player to flourish.
The left-back has made 93 appearances for the Premier League side, scoring five goals and registering 36 assists during his three years with The Tractor Boys. Moreover, he was part of the squad that helped Ipswich Town earn promotion to the top flight last season.
Is Leif Davis a candidate for the Three Lions?
The 24-year-old’s production and England’s lack of a bonafide starter at the left-back position are prompting pundit Micah Richards to state that Davis, or any other player, for that matter, could take the job as it’s open.
“I’m looking at left-back as well because Levi Colwill is a very good player who played really well again [against the Republic of Ireland] but he’s not a left-back, he’s a center-half,” Richards said on The Rest is Football Podcast (h/t HITC).
“Luke Shaw is always picking up injuries, I think that left-back spot is up for grabs if someone can really grab it.”
The former Leeds man already has one assist in three Premier League matches for Ipswich Town. If Davis can put together quality performances this month, it would be difficult for interim manager Lee Carsley to ignore.
While Davis has a chance to experience personal success, Ipswich Town have one point in three matches. It will be interesting to see if they can turn around the situation and remain in the top flight past this season.
Nonetheless, if Davis does perform well to earn a call-up, many clubs in the Premier League will have him on their radar to land him should Ipswich Town be relegated after this campaign.
