Neil Redfearn has insisted that Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph is growing into the number 9 role despite not getting the goals at this moment in time.

Daniel Farke has hung his hat on Joseph being the number 9 for Leeds this season and he has been the starting striker for the Whites in the Championship.

Despite Joel Piroe scoring three goals from the bench in the last four games, the Leeds boss has continued to trust the Spaniard who has scored just once this season.

With Patrick Bamford struggling with fitness, Joseph is likely to get an extended run in the Leeds team as their number 9 in the ongoing campaign.

Joseph has earned praise for the way he is leading the line for Leeds and Redfearn believes the goals will come with time.

Mateo Joseph giving something different to Leeds United, says Redfearn

Redfearn stressed that there is something different that the Spaniard is adding to the Leeds team from the number 9 position this season.

He conceded that he is not scoring the goals at the minute, but the former Leeds boss pointed the way he has been leading the line with his physicality and work ethic.

The former Leeds manager is certain that the goals will come once Joseph gets the time he needs to feel settled in the role as the permanent number 9 for the Whites.

“Mateo Joseph is giving Leeds something in a different way”, Redfearn said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“Perhaps not in front of the goal or the goals he is getting but he is leading the line really well, he has got great energy, he holds up the ball well, he is a strong boy and he has got great work ethic.

“He is growing into it and I can see him scoring goals further down the line.

“He just needs a little bit of time to get his feet under the table and be that permanent 9.”
