Ex-Liverpool player eyes return to England as Leeds could be fit amid midfield injuries

Leeds United’s midfield has been hit hard by injuries, with Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev sidelined. Moreover, a veteran midfielder could be available once the January window comes around, and a report suggests that Championship clubs are calling.

Ampadu is set to miss the rest of the year, with reports indicating he could return in early 2025. Leeds will have to manage without their captain for the foreseeable future, and Ao Tanaka stepped in to fill the void, making his first start for the club against Norwich City on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, during the 1-1 draw against Norwich, Gruev had to leave the match early because of a knee injury. There’s no timeline for his return, which is a setback for the team as they were likely counting on a Gruev-Tanaka partnership to help compensate for Ampadu’s absence.

With injuries piling up, Leeds’ squad depth is becoming a concern. It doesn’t seem that the Whites will sign a free agent, so their best option now is to hold tight and wait for the January transfer window.

Former Liverpool standout could return to England

According to The Sun, Premier League and Championship clubs are monitoring a potential move for 34-year-old Jordan Henderson. Henderson, who is captain of Ajax, has been finding it difficult to consistently secure a starting spot with the Dutch side.

While there may be tax implications following his departure from Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq, Henderson believes this won’t pose a problem. With January approaching quickly, he could make a return to English football.

The report suggests a possible comeback to his boyhood club, Sunderland, who are currently at the top of the Championship table following Illan Meslier’s error on Friday night. However, Leeds also need a midfielder, and Henderson could be the right fit for them.

Henderson could provide valuable veteran leadership and winning experience to the squad. However, the question for Leeds is whether they’re looking for a short-term solution for their midfield or someone who can contribute long-term.

There’s also the matter of whether the 34-year-old is willing to drop down to the second tier of English football. As the January transfer window approaches, the rumors are likely to intensify.
