Fabrizio Romano confirms £9m Leeds United January exit

Jack Harrison endured a torrid outing in Leeds United’s 3–1 FA Cup victory over Derby County on Sunday, a display that may prove to be his final appearance for the Whites.

Daniel Farke opted to bring Harrison back into the fold last summer after his two-year loan spell at Everton, despite large sections of the fanbase calling for his departure.

Since then, however, the winger has struggled for opportunities, failing to log any meaningful Premier League minutes since November and spending much of the past couple of months on the bench.

It now appears Leeds have decided to move him on, with Harrison no longer viewed as a key part of the squad. Fiorentina are in talks to sign him, and Fabrizio Romano has now provided a crucial update.

Jack Harrison is set to earn a considerable fee for Leeds United

It emerged earlier today that Fiorentina are on the verge of finalising a deal to sign the 29-year-old winger from Leeds in the winter window.

He is understood to be on his way to Italy, and negotiations are at an advanced stage between the two clubs and his representatives.

Table: Jack Harrison’s per-90 attacking output and percentile rankings over the last year
Statistic (per 90) Value Percentile

Fabrizio Romano has now provided more updates on the details of the deal as Harrison prepares for a fresh chapter in his life away from Leeds this winter.

It has been claimed that he will be joining Fiorentina on loan, with the Serie A outfit reserving an option to buy him for a deal close to the £9m mark.

Leeds are happy to let him go and potentially earn a solid fee from his sale in the summer if he manages to impress at Fiorentina in the second half of the season.

Will Leeds spend the money in January?

Leeds have managed to secure a lucrative clause that could see them earn somewhere around £9m from the eventual sale of Harrison in the summer.

There is no guarantee that Fiorentina will take up the option to buy him, and Italian clubs are notorious for going back on their word in such deals. However, there is some hope.

Farke would prefer to bring in someone not to replace Harrison, but improve the overall quality of their squad. His departure will free up some space in the wage bill, and the potential transfer fee will ease some of their PSR worries.

Suddenly, Leeds may now have the funds to bring in that extra centre-back and a striker the manager has been keen to sign in the ongoing window.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds feel confident about getting a fee from Harrison’s departure to reinvest in the squad in the next two weeks or so.
