With eight games left in the season, Leeds United are involved in a tight fight to finish in the top two of the Championship and earn automatic promotion to the Premier League. The Whites are still the favourites to get promoted and an ex-Leeds star is insistent that they are still the best team in the league.
Leeds United have 80 points on the board but Sheffield United are level on points with the Whites and Burnley are just two points behind them in third.
It is now a three-way fight for the top two spots but Leeds are still being backed to get the job done because of an easier run-in and they could still finish with as much as 100 points at the end of the season.
Leeds will host Swansea City at Elland Road and will look to get their season going again this weekend after a patchy run of form that has seen them just win two of their last five games.
Leeds United are still the best team in the Championship – Former White
Liam Cooper was on the pitch consoling the Leeds players after they lost the playoff final last season and he moved on from the club in the summer.
The former Leeds captain stressed even if he looks from a neutral perspective, he cannot find another team in the Championship who are a better side or have a better squad than the Yorkshire giants.
He is certain that Daniel Farke and his Leeds players will secure promotion and get the job done before the end of the season.
“Taking my Leeds hat off and being neutral, I think we have by far the best squad in the league. We’ve been the best team all season and hopefully, that’s enough to get us over the line”, Cooper told Leeds Live.
“I’ve not really seen one team who’s as good, so I’m sure Daniel [Farke] and the boys will get the job done and then everything will be okay come May.”
Leeds must believe in themselves as they approach the business end of the season
Their recently patchy run of form has taken away some of the momentum Leeds were enjoying a few weeks back and they are under more pressure.
However, Leeds are still sitting at the summit of the Championship table and are very much in control of their destiny going into the final eight games of the season.
Can you name the Leeds game these 10 goal celebrations are from?
Six of the eight teams they will face are in the bottom half of the table and Leeds must back themselves to get the points needed to secure automatic promotion.
Leeds won six and drew two in the games against their next eight opponents earlier in the season and they have a legitimate chance of matching, if not bettering those results.
Cooper is right, Leeds have been the best team in the league and they have a chance to show it in the final few weeks of the regular Championship season.
