Leeds United are in fine form and just got a huge result in their first game of the new year. Fans are now excited at the possibility of staying up in the Premier League following recent results.

But everyone knows that the January transfer window will play a key role in this fight for survival. Other teams in and around Leeds are adding reinforcements in the market just over 24 hours into the winter window.

There is a bit of scepticism at the club over if the 49ers will actually sanction deals this month, considering the Whites had a very quiet winter window last year. And with the money spent this summer, and the club chiefs explaining the club’s PSR stance, there is a bit of worry that transfers could be rare in the coming weeks.

Graham Smyth thinks Leeds United need to strengthen key areas

Graham Smyth, speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, suggested that Leeds need to add to three areas of the team. He thinks that would enough to strengthen the team as they fight for survival:

“Centre-forward, yes, probably a centre back for me has become quite important and if it’s possible to bring in a midfielder who’s got a bit of flair and passing ability and can run a lot.

“Maybe we’re asking too much, I don’t know, but if you don’t ask, you don’t get.”

Whites need reinforcements to see out the season

Everything Smyth has pointed out is true about the team; the recent run of form does not negate any of this. Leeds still look like they lack goals outside of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The creativity in the team is sometimes obviously lacking, and there is a clear need for depth at center back after recent new of Joe Rodon’s injury.

Leeds United rank in the PL this season
Statistic Rank
Goals 13th
Shots per game 8th
Big Chances created 10th
Key passes 12th
Expected goals 10th

If the 49ers can back the team in the January window, it would put fans at ease on their expectations for the rest of the season. Giving Daniel Farke more tools to work with could be the difference between relegation and survival at the end of the campaign.
