Before the match between Cardiff City and Leeds United kicked off, there was an emotional tribute to Sol Bamba, who had played for both clubs. Furthermore, a former teammate honored the player with a few words on Sky Sports.

The former Ivory Coast defender, who had also served as the technical director at Turkish club Adanaspor, passed away in late August at the age of 39.

“Leeds United are devastated to learn of the passing of former captain Sol Bamba at the age of 39,” the club said on August 31 in a statement following the player’s death. “One of the nicest people in football, the thoughts of everyone at Leeds United are with Sol’s family and friends at this tragic time.”

Bamba joined Leeds United on loan from Palermo in January 2015 and made an impact, racking up 56 appearances and scoring five goals during his time at the club.

He made his debut against Huddersfield Town, helping secure a 2-1 victory, and just two months later, he netted his first goal in a 3-0 win at Fulham.

After leaving Elland Road in September 2016, Bamba signed with Cardiff City, where he played until 2021 and made 118 appearances for the Bluebirds.

Sean Morrison speaks highly of Sol Bamba

Before the matchup between Bamba’s two former clubs, a heartfelt tribute took place on the pitch, featuring his family as both teams came together to honor the player. Moreover, on Sky Sports, former player Sean Morrison spoke about Bamba and the type of teammate the defender was.

“I think for the football world in general; I think you saw the outpouring of love on social media afterward,” Morrison said regarding the death of Bamba. “It proves how many lives Sol touched. Anyone [who] came into contact with him realized how special of a man he was. And that’s what he was. He was an incredible man.

“I’ve never met anyone like him. He walked into a room and you knew Sol was there. Infectious smile, incredible laugh. And like I said, it’s hurt the world of football. Life can be cruel sometimes, and he’s going to be sorely missed.”
