Former Leeds boss identifies key factor limiting Farke’s attacking strategy

Leeds United v Valencia CF Pre-Season Friendly 03/08/2024. Daniel Farke of Leeds United (Manager) arrives at the ground

Leeds United generated 15 shots in their 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Saturday, and the concerns about the attack continue to be discussed. Moreover, ex-Leeds United manager Simon Grayson believes a missing link in the squad prevents them from unlocking their full potential this season.

The Whites failed to convincingly win over the Bluebirds, who played with 10 men for most of the contest. Largie Ramazani scored in the 30th minute to give the away side a 1-0 lead, but that was all the goals Daniel Farke and his team would generate until the latter stages of the second half.

In the 87th minute, substitute Joël Piroe found the back of the net, securing an important insurance goal. Despite the win, it wasn’t until late that Leeds could put the contest away against the home side despite the advantage.

Simon Grayson reveals what Leeds need to take attack to the next level

Brenden Aaronson has returned following his loan stint last season at Union Berlin and made an early impact. However, Grayson insists the squad still lacks the inventive spark that a dedicated No. 10 could provide.

The former Leeds boss urged the club to address this gap during the summer window and remains firm in that belief, highlighting the team’s lack of ruthlessness in the final third.

“Before the transfer window closed I said Leeds needed a creative No.10 to pull the strings in midfield,” Grayson told The Football League Paper. “I still think that’s the case, if only to add competition for places, but there’s more than enough quality in that team to win promotion.”

“What they really need is a bit of composure and ruthlessness in that final third. Time and again you see them dominate pressure and chances, but it’s like they’re always trying to score the perfect goal. They’ve not scored from outside the box for a long time. They’ve not scored off a set-piece for months and months. You don’t always have to walk the ball into the net.”

The January transfer window will open in a couple of months, and Leeds will be looking to find that No. 10. Furthermore, that could be the deciding factor in whether the Whites earn promotion to the Premier League next season.
