Former Leeds captain Liam Cooper in talks to join Bulgarian giants

Leeds United hasn't made an official renewal offer to Liam Cooper yet

Former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has opened talks over a move to Bulgarian giants CSKA Sofia as he seeks to find a new club outside the transfer window.

Cooper’s contract with Leeds expired at the end of last season and he departed the club after spending a decade with the Yorkshire giants both in the Championship and the Premier League.

The Scot was the leader and an important player in the Leeds team that won promotion to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa in the 2019/20 season.

However, the defender’s influence in the team waned towards the end of his time at Leeds and he featured just 15 times in the Championship last season despite being the club captain.

Liam Cooper has been seeking a new team and is now in talks to move to Bulgaria.

Cooper has been linked with a move to several clubs since he left Leeds but he is yet to find a new team to play for over the last few months.

His free agent status does allow him to join any club even beyond the end of the window and he is now in talks to move to Bulgaria if things go according to plan.

The 33-year-old centre-back is in negotiations with Bulgarian giants CSKA Sofia over a move to the club on a free transfer, according to Football Insider.

The transfer window closed in Bulgaria on 2nd September but Cooper’s free agent status gives CSKA Sofia the opportunity to sign him outside the window.

The Bulgarian club is looking to add some experience to their squad and the former Leeds captain has emerged as a convenient option for the club.

Cooper has never played outside England apart from representing Scotland but is likely to have the experience to adapt if CSKA Sofia sign him in the coming days.
