Former Leeds United star in the running for Coventry City job

Leeds United championship rivals Coventry City suffered a blow as their manager was sacked this week.

Mark Robins was sacked on Thursday, bringing an end to his long stay at the club. The news came as a shock to Coventry fans, as the club had won two of their last three games.

The sacking came after Coventry lost 1-0 to Derby County. The statement from the club said that the reason Robins was sacked was due to poor results in the league:

“The club is well aware that this is a difficult moment after over seven very successful years at the helm and this decision is not taken lightly.

“The performance of the team over an extended period however have just not been good enough and as such the board of the club has decided to make an immediate change in leadership.”

Leeds United beat Coventry 3-0 when the two sides met at Elland Road in September. That was the game where Ethan Ampadu got injured.

Rhys Carr has been named interim coach as the search for a new boss continues. One of the names linked to the Coventry City job is former Leeds United star Robbie Keane.

Keane began his coaching career after retiring from professional football in 2018. Since then he has coached in India, been assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland and Middlesbrough, and eventually joined Sam Allardyce at Leeds United in 2023.

The 44-year old’s last job was with Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he lead them to the league title and the round of 16 in the Europa Conference League.

How good has Robbie Keane been in his coaching career ?

His playing days speak for itself, a consistent goalscorer at every club he played for in England. Keane’s coaching career has been impressive so far, with an Israeli Premier League win in his first season a real highlight. He also won the domestic cup with the team.

During his short time as assistant manager at Leeds, he had the belief that he and Sam Allardyce could have turned the team around and saved them from relegation:

“I wish we were here a bit longer because I think we would have made a real good impact on the players,” Keane told BBC Radio Leeds.

“I’ve seen already in a week what we can do, what I can do to make the players better.”

If he is hired, he will be expected to challenge for promotion. Last season Coventry reached the playoffs. Leeds United, who are currently in a playoff spot, are looking to boost their squad in January.
