Frank Lampard admits to using Leeds United ‘trick’ as Coventry City maintain unbeaten start to the season

Last season in the Championship, Leeds United recorded one of the best campaigns in recent memory. What Daniel Farke achieved with the team was very surprising, after he lost some of his best players that summer.

Leeds won the league title on the final day of the season, reaching the 100-point mark. Their performances on the pitch were scintillating too, as their attack managed 95 goals in the Championship. The Whites’ defensive record was outstanding too.

They have had to change their style a bit this season, but the results show a lot of optimism for the months ahead.

Frank Lampard has Coventry City flying in the Championship nine games into the new season; the Sky Blues are unbeaten and have scored 27 goals so far. The former Premier League star admits he picked up things from Leeds United and Burnley from last season. Lampard, speaking on TalkSport, said the fitness levels of Daniel Farke’s side last year inspired him to do the same this pre-season with his team.

“Out of a group of 20-plus players, some don’t love running, others do and others are in the middle,” he said.

“You need to get them to buy in and tell them this is what it’ll look like if we can be that team with an amazing work ethic.

“It was clear to me last year, Leeds and Burnley were the two outstanding teams in the league and have a lot of Premier League minutes already.

“But their levels of output were bigger than others. That was our challenge this year, to get fit in pre-season to push ourselves.

Frank Lampard’s record vs Leeds

Lampard is not a name Leeds fans would like to hear after he denied them promotion a few seasons ago. But the former Chelsea player has a losing record against the Whites, suffering four defeats in his last eight matches.

His Coventry side even lost 2-0 to Leeds and Daniel Farke last season, as they later failed to reach the Championship playoff final. With his start to the season so far, maybe the Sky Blues could return to the Premier League next year.
