Frank Lampard returns to rival Leeds United

Leeds United are currently top of the Championship as they seek to win Premier League promotion this season.

Last year, Leeds finished with 90 points and 81 goals but missed out on an automatic promotion place. Eventually they lost the playoff final to Southampton. Everyone expected Leeds to not be in the promotion race this season, but Daniel Farke has proved everyone wrong so far. After 17 games, the Whites have 35 points and sit top of the table.

One of the teams in recent years that have fallen off after making the Championship playoffs is Coventry City. After almost making the Premier League in 2022/23. Coventry lost the playoff final to Luton Town on penalties.

Since then, the club have struggled to rediscover their form from that year; Coventry finished ninth last season, nine points off the playoff places.

The Sky Blues sacked Mark Robins, who had been in charge of the club for the last seven years. The hunt for a new manager had been on for the past few weeks; former Leeds United man Robbie Keane was a candidate for the job at one point. Now, the club have hired former Chelsea and Derby County manager Frank Lampard on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Coventry are currently sitting in 17th place in the Championship, and face Cardiff City in their next game. Frank Lampard has a big job on his hands to keep the team from sliding further down the table. Coventry owner Doug King said the former Premier League star has what it takes to move the club to the next level:

“I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as head coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this league to be successful.

“His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach.”

Leeds fans will meet Lampard again

Leeds United fans will have to wait till February if they want another chance at Frank Lampard. Daniel Farke’s men will be away to the Sky Blues on 8th February in the Championship. There will certainly be no love lost when this fanbase interacts with Frank Lampard again. Hopefully Leeds would have made some transfers in the January window, with Manchester City’s James McAtee the main target.
