Leeds United fans were over the moon when the signing of Dan James was announced as it was clear they were lacking depth on the wing.
But Gary Neville has spoken about Dan James, in particular the comments the Welshman made in a recent interview with the Telegraph. James acknowledged how he had been playing too ‘safe’, before adding “safe is dangerous in the position I play.” James is clearly taking note of a weakness in his game and setting out to improve upon it.
Neville took to Twitter to agree with James, saying “it’s alarming how many wide players/forwards get stuck in build-up, pockets, half turns and possession and forget why they are there!” Neville is referring to how wingers such as James are too concerned with keeping the ball rather than taking risks to try and create a goal.
Dan James this morning with @TelegraphDucker. Seems an obvious thing but it’s alarming how many wide players/forwards get stuck in build up , pockets, half turns and possession and forget why they are there! Goals , assists & to run behind defenders with and without the ball! pic.twitter.com/Vv7mToFURi

Under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa, there is no doubt that this weakness in James’ game will be addressed at some stage. We hope he can make an immediate impact at Leeds.
